While other flowers like petunias, pansies, marigolds will dry up quickly, a major advantage of purchasing a hibiscus plant is that the plant will continue flowering for at least a year. During winter and spring , it appears that aphid attacks on the flowers are frequent due to which the stem is getting a white coating and flowers do not bloom. During summer due to the heat, in May 2016, the number of ants and aphids are relatively less, and the hibiscus flowers are again blooming.
However, due to the earlier ant and aphid attack the hibiscus plant flowers have been affected to some extent.
Some of the flowers which are blooming do not have any petals at all. Unlike the flowers with petals which bloom for only one day , the flower with no petals is blooming for two days before withering and falling off.

Miniature valerian flowers

While the Indian valerian is a popular flower found in many gardens, a new miniature variety of valerian is now available . The local plant vendors in Mumbai on the roadside are having these plants which do not require much space or maintenance, yet bloom fairly quickly.
The plant was grown in a black polybag of height less than 15 cm and diameter less than 10 cm, yet the plant has started yielding small flowers around 40 days after the plant was brought from Mumbai by air. In contrast the valerian grown in gardens is a far bigger plant.
One of the biggest advantage of growing the indian valerian ( there are a number of variants) available is that the plant does not require regular watering, so can survive for years without much maintenance.

Orchid flowers bloom for a long time

| Uncategorized

For decorating a room, flowers are often selected depending on how long they continue to bloom without wilting or drying up. Some flowers like hibiscus will bloom only for day, shrivel and dry within 12 hours. Other flowers like roses, gerberas, marigolds will last for a longer period of time, usually 4-5 days, depending on the quality of the flowers.
However among all the popular flowers, orchids will usually bloom for the longest period of time. The purple and white variety of orchid is popular in Goa and the flowers will bloom for about a month, before wilting.
So though orchid plants are more expensive compared to other plants costing around Rs 450 a plant, the flowers will bloom for a long time, making it a worthwhile investment for gardeners interested in growing flowers

| Uncategorized

In the last fortnight, the chilli plant which was growing in the same pot as the hibiscus plant started flowering, and had as many as five small flowers. These flowers are small, white in color with grey stamens.
However though these flowers were blooming for two or three days, they only dried away, no chillies were formed.
Ants were spotted on the chilli plants , however these flowers could not get pollinated
After some dies, the flowers, withered and dried away, now there are some new buds on the chilli plant.
It would be interesting to find out the yield of the chilli plant, whether it will yield any chilli or just wither away, especially as the chilli prices are high.
